Green Biologics has brought GreenFlame a USDA
BioPreferred certified, natural, clean-burning fuel
to the market. The Ashland, Va.-based company’s charcoal lighter fluid does not contain the potentially harmful chemicals associated with fossil fuels. It lights instantly,
stays lit and burns cleanly without adding a petroleum taste
“Consumers are becoming increasingly sustainability-minded as well as increasingly aware of chemical taste in
their food,” said David Anderson, global VP of marketing
for Green Biologics.
The key component of GreenFlame charcoal lighter is
n-butanol, a biobased chemical produced via a patented
fermentation process at Green Biologics plant in Little
Falls, Minn. The plant, which was previously used by a
local cooperative to produce ethanol, was retrofitted
by Green Biologics for its proprietary process. It uses
U.S.-grown corn as its primary feedstock. The fuel
does not contain ethanol, which has documented limi-
tations as a charcoal lighter fluid.
GreenFlame charcoal lighter fluid is currently roll-
ing out across the country through Kroger and, in
response to growing consumer demand for green
products, other retailers have signed commitments to
sell GreenFlame on their shelves, including Albertsons’
subsidiary, Safeway, which started offering the prod-
uct in its 275 Northern California stores, and Bristol
Farms, an upscale grocery store in Southern California
specializing in gourmet, organic and natural foods.
