SALES REVIEW
APPLE SALES ARE JUST DANDY. During the latest 52 weeks, ended July 1, 2017, apples accounted for 6 percent of total produce dollar sales and 12. 9 percent of total fruit sales. Apples had average sales of $3,138 per store per week, up 0.9
percent over the previous year. Average volume sales also increased, up
1.6 percent compared to the previous year, thanks in part to a slight dip
in average retail price from $1.65 to $1.64. The apples category is made
up of 39 segments, which posted varied sales performance during the
latest 52 weeks. Gala apples, which accounted for 24 percent of apple
sales, increased sales 7. 5 percent compared to the previous year, and
Honeycrisp, which accounted for 19. 7 percent of apples sales, increased
average sales 16. 85 compared to the previous year. However, 28 of the 39
apples segments declined in sales during this period.
Regionally, apples posted an even contribution to produce sales in
the Central, East, South and West
regions. Apples posted the highest contribution to total produce sales in
the Central region at 6. 8 percent, followed by the South region at 6 per-
cent. However, apples posted the highest average sales in the East region
at $3,669 per store per week (up 3. 4 percent compared to the previous
year), followed by the Central region at $3,662 per store per week (up 2.3
percent compared to the previous year). During this time, apple sales
in the South region declined 0.5 percent to $2,688 per store per week.
Apple sales spiked in October and November, with the highest average sales occurring the week of October 8, 2016, at $3,831 per store. The
second highest-selling week occurred the week of the Thanksgiving
holiday (November 26, 2016) at $3,812 per store. The lowest selling
week for apples was the week of the Fourth of July holiday (the week
ending July 9, 2016) at $2,394 per store.
