Celebrity Chef Bobby Flay – famous for his throw
down challenges – better not even think about going
up against the chefs at Food Circus.
Michelle Cantalupo and Miguel Morales successfully defended the Foodtown operator’s title of
2017 Supermarket Industry Best Chef Cook-off
Winner in a contest sponsored by the New Jersey
Food Council. They had also won the title in 2016.
Cantalupo and Morales competed against chefs
from two different ShopRite operators as well as from
Quick Chek, a 150-unit convenience store chain, held
at Harrah’s in Atlantic City, during the casino’s Viking
Kitchen event held as part of the New Jersey Food
“We made two dishes – a pan-seared Chilean sea
bass as our entrée and a chocolate tamale as our des-
sert,” says Cantalupo, supervisor of fresh foods at
Food Circus Super Markets, based in Middletown,
N.J. “We had two hours to cook and presented to five
judges, four who belong to the Food Council and one who is the head chef at Harrah’s.”
Unlike the popular Food Network show Chopped, the chefs knew what they were going
to make. “They asked us a couple of months beforehand, so there is time to practice. But
the options are open. There are no specific items that they are looking for,” she says.
“I can’t say enough about how proud I am of our foodservice team here at Food
Circus,” says Lou Scaduto Jr., president of Food Circus.
