trends they see on the horizon, as well as predictions for the next big thing.
WGB: If you had to identify the top two
trends a;ecting the pet category, what
would they be, based on what you see
happening in the marketplace today?
Rapid [price-per-pound] growth due
to the humanization trend. People are
imparting their healthier eating styles on
their pets. [Also,] relatively dramatic growth
of online business as a percent of total
category sales. This is driven by increased
e-commerce marketing e;orts and product
assortment o;ered by Chewy.com, Amazon

Better-for-you pet food and treats. Many
pet owners are looking for brands that
boast real meat as the first ingredient,
grain-free formulas, limited ingredient
recipes, high/unique protein sources and
natural ingredients; functional treats that
are growing faster than the rest of the treat
category, nearly 5% growth vs. 3.6%; and
pet treats that specifically address dental
health, which make up 12% of the total
pet treat category. [Also,] continued, quick
growth of e-commerce. Although Chewy
and Amazon are large players, brick-and-
mortar e-commerce [retailers] will be a big
