That means promoting sought-after ingredients, making sure labels tell a complete and always truthful story,
and educating pet owners about how good nutrition can
help their pets live longer and healthier lives is a winning
formula for manufacturers and the retailers who carry
their product lines.
Premiumized cat food: Manufacturers are beginning to realize there’s an opening to upgrade o;erings in
the cat food arena, and they are introducing the kind of
superpremium food that traditionally has been the purview of the dog subcategory. “Now that superpremium
dog food has gone mainstream,” the Packaged Facts
report says, “it is time to turn the spotlight on our feline
friends,” for which there are boundless opportunities.
“Because cat owners are increasingly informed about
the health and nutritional needs of their cats, they are
increasingly receptive to—and willing to pay more for—
better-quality products, leaving it to pet food makers to
continually raise the health and wellness bar.” P H
Several companies are formulating products that dovetail with
the latest pet category trends:
Chewy Louie. Bully Slices from Chewy Louie, Redbarn’s line of
premium treats and chews for the FD&M markets, are thick, slow-roasted strips of natural cowhide coated in a secret bully gravy;
they’re packed with blueberries, cranberries and vitamin E.
Jones Naturals LLC. In late March, the company will launch Pure
Premiums, a line of seven SKUs of limited- or single-ingredient
exotic proteins, nutritional supermixes and 100% single-ingredient chicken and turkey. Products in the line are produced
in the USA using only USA-raised and -sourced ingredients.
Purina. The Purina One line, recently updated to be all-natural,
includes targeted formulas for pets of all ages, sizes and special
needs. The Purina One True Instinct line has higher protein
levels from novel protein sources such as turkey, venison,
salmon and tuna. Other recently introduced products include
Advanced Clean Dental Chew and ActivFresh treats from the
DentaLife brand; 100% dust-free Tidy Cats Lightweight Litter;
and the new fragrance-free Tidy Cats Free & Clean Litter in
traditional and lightweight varieties.
