Woodlake Market had its last major remodel
in 2015, when LED lighting was installed
throughout the grocery section to illuminate
the store and the adult beverage section was
dramatically revamped. Before the renovations, wine was spread throughout the store
layout, which officials say was confusing
for shoppers. The wine and spirits are now
housed in their own section at the center of
the store, which has since become known in
its community for its vast selection of standard favorites and premium products.
The adult beverages are graced by about
20 feet of space for whiskey, with countless
SKUs. Despite the large selection, Business
Manager Gerald Allison says the retailer is
extremely particular about its selection and
makes a point to stock unique offerings. Offer-
ings include premium spirits, highlighted
in sleek endcaps, such as a $5,500 bottle of
Macallan M whisky. Woodlake Market also
bought an entire barrel of an exclusive Knob
Creek bourbon and had it bottled specially
for the store’s customers. One of the store’s
flagship adult beverages is the local Wiscon-
sin-made, velvety smooth Art of Kohler Orig-
inal Chocolates Dark Chocolate Brandy.
A selection of beers can be found in refriger-
ators and a small pine-paneled walk-in cooler
adorned with stacks of antique beer cans. The
wooden wall is peppered with old-style neon
bar signs that give it a real pub feel, but the
aisle stocks local and craft beers as well.
“You can tell someone is from Chicago by
the amount of New Glarus beer they have in
their shopping cart,” Allison says of the local
brew sold only in Wisconsin. “Every Saturday there is going to be at least one person
who fills up an entire shopping cart with New
Glarus beer.” One customer even bought all
of the New Glarus in-store displays, he says,
including an inflatable cow and cheeseheads.
