has resulted in a retail success story in which the
sum is greater than its parts.
“As one of the largest grocery stores in America, Kroger has a range of industry-leading
operations systems that we’ve been able to
learn from and leverage to benefit our shops
and improve the customer experience,” Chubbuck says.
“At the same time, the primary reason that
Kroger was interested in bringing Murray’s to
their shops was because they recognized our
commitment to customer experience backed
by delicious food/grocery items, so it’s been a
symbiotic relationship,” she says.

us to bring this mission to life in ways we never
could have imagined. Every day, our associates
take us one step closer to achieving this, and we
would not be able to do so without them.”
Top-Notch Management and Training
A comprehensive training program coupled
with thoughtful management and program
execution have been crucial to the partnership’s
success. A team of 17 Murray’s employees is
dedicated to leading trainings, merchandising
the shops and working with Kroger store teams
on a day-to-day basis.
“All associates who work behind our counters in Kroger stores are Kroger employees, and
we have about 1,200 associates working in our
Murray’s in Kroger shops,” Chubbuck says.
Strong ties between Kroger and the Murray’s
mother ship in New York further enhances the
cohesive relationship. Before a store opens,
Kroger Cheese Masters (department leads) and
store management head to New York for a two-day orientation about the program.
Murray’s works with Kroger and its divisions
to manage and execute the program within
Kroger stores. Together, Murray’s and Kroger
determine product selection, set promotions
and select stores.
“Once the store opens, our team of trainers
works with the associates on an ongoing basis
to conduct training modules that focus on product knowledge, customer experience and operations,” Chubbuck says.
The Kroger associates who work in Murray’s
Cheese shops also participate in prestigious
“Red Jacket” training.
“Red Jacket training is our hallmark training program that focuses on customer service,
product knowledge and merchandising that all
Murray’s shop associates must take,” she says.
Once training is complete, Kroger associates
must pass a written test to earn the coveted Red
Jacket. “Cheese Masters are Kroger employees
who oversee that cheese shop, but they must
also take Red Jacket training in order to wear
the uniform,” Chubbuck says.
A Shared Vision
At first blush, a locally owned cheese purveyor
from New York and one of the largest retailers
in the world don’t necessarily suggest two peas
in a pod. But a common goal and shared vision
of the importance of the customer experience
