that the Beyond Meat brands are sold in the refrigerated
meat section next to their animal-based counterparts.
“Our point of view is the Beyond Meat brands are
an extension of animal meats and provide consumers
healthier center-plate protein options in the place where
meat reducers or flexitarians shop for these items,”
Muth says. “This approach to merchandising has been
highly successful and well received by retailers and
shoppers.”
The Retail Connection
As more consumers adopt meat-free or meat-limited
diets, savvy retailers are stepping up to attract
these shoppers into their stores. Weiss Markets, for
example, recently launched a new Plant Powered
program featuring in-store signage that identifies a
variety of healthful plant-based foods; Publix offers a
wealth of information about plant-based diets online;
and South Carolina’s Hendersonville Community Co-Op offers a series of lectures, community events and
classes focused on plant-based eating.
A variety of resources can help retailers educate
themselves and their customers about plant-based
foods:
• Plant Based Foods Association (plantbasedfoods.
org)
• The Good Food Institute ( gfi.org)
• Plant Protein Month ( plantproteinmonth.com)
The site includes information about Plant Protein
Month (April), plus the downloadable “Plant
Protein 101” and other resources.
