HITTING THE SAUCE
WITH A DIFFERENCE
The Hickey Bottom Barbecue Co. line of
sauces differs from most of the big names on
the shelf in that it contains no high fructose corn syrup or MSG, and the company’s number-one best-seller – Hickey Bottom
BBQ Sweet Sauce – is 100-percent natural.
“Our sauce isn’t like other barbecue sauces,”
says Rebecca McCrea, founder and proprietor of Hickey Bottom Barbecue Co., based in
Fenelton, Pa. “It’s hearty and thick, but kind
of luxurious when it comes out of the bottle.
It’s so good. I use it as a regular condiment on
baked potatoes and even on corn and salads.”
McCrea – Becky to her friends and fam-
ily – started making barbecue sauce nearly 20
years ago when she could not find a sauce she
liked. She always had to add spices, herbs and
other ingredients to commercial sauces to
make it just right. The result of her efforts is
Hickey Bottom BBQ Sauces line.
Hickey Bottom Barbecue Co. sauces are
available in Sweet, Hot and Honey BBQ
varieties, as well as Smokey Hot Sauce and
Grillin’ Rub. All are packaged in 19-ounce
shatterproof plastic bottles and have a suggested retail price of $3.49.

STIRRING UP HOT
CHOCOLATE
Hammonds Brands is creating a stir in the candy aisle with the
launch of Hot Chocolate Dunking Spoons.
According to company officials, the line is available in several
flavors, including Milk Chocolate, Dark Chocolate and Dark
Salted Caramel, as well as seasonal offerings, Milk Pumpkin
Spice and Dark Peppermint. The 1.5-ounce chocolate-cov-ered spoon transforms into a rich hot chocolate when stirred
into a hot 8-ounce mug of milk.
Hammonds Hot Chocolate Dunking Spoons are available in
a single pack, merchandised 15 units per wholesale case, with
a suggested retail price of $2.99. A gift pack of two chocolate
spoons and four large homemade marshmallows is also available for $7.99. Company officials suggest they be merchandised
either in the candy or hot cocoa mix aisles.
“Our Hot Chocolate Dunking Spoons take one of America’s
oldest desserts – even the colonists drank it – and gives it a
gourmet twist,” says Andrew Schuman, president and CEO of
Hammonds Brands, based in Denver. “Using an age-old recipe
and the highest quality ingredients ensures that each cup packs a comforting, flavorful
punch. With the average American drinking 20. 4 gallons of milk each year, stores can’t go
wrong in offering a delicious accompaniment for this go-to beverage.”
