Talk about Lanes Brands and the
types of products it offers.
JonaThan Groves: Lanes Brands is
a subsidiary of LanesHealth, a market
leader in consumer health products in
the U.K. LanesHealth was founded more
than 80 years ago by my great grandfather,
natural remedies expert, Gilbert Lane.
Today, my mother, Janet Groves, and I are
pleased to be running the company.
Some of our brands in the U.K. include
Olbas, a line of herbal remedies that feature a special mixture of pure plant oils,
which produce soothing natural vapors.
In 2007, we acquired Jakemans and still
make our soothing lozenges using the
finest natural ingredients at our plant in
Boston, England. Another of our brands,
Kalms, is a natural herbal supplement that
supports a healthy, restful sleep. Earex
provides consumers with a range of treatments for common ear problems including ear pain, inflammation and even temporary hearing loss caused by infection
and earwax buildup. Our Pro Plus product provides a caffeine kick to relieve the
symptoms of fatigue and tiredness.
What changes have taken place
at Lanes Brands?
It has been a very exciting time for us
as of late. We have increased our commitment to the U.S. market and in July
we moved our U.S. headquarters to new
offices in Bedford, N.H., expanding our
sales, accounting and administration staff.
We also recently acquired the Smith Bros.
brand. So we have been very busy indeed.
speaking of smith Bros., what are
the plans for that brand?
The Smith Bros. brand is a unique
American treasure. We are working hard
to restore it as a source of comfort and
relief that so many have come to trust over
the years. The brand has so much his-
tory and we are amazed at the connection
many consumers have to Smith Bros.
Where do Lanes Brands products
sell best in supermarkets?
Consumers are becoming more aware
that natural products are just as effective
as conventional, and it is becoming more
common for natural and conventional
products to be merchandised together.
Our products are rarely merchandised in
“natural only” sets. We do well right up
against conventional products.
What products are launching in
the U.s. this year?
We are very excited about our two new
product launches. GOPO Rosehip with
Galactolipids is a new, natural joint sup-
port supplement. Based on a specially
processed cultivar of Danish rosehip,
GOPO has been studied in Europe for
more than 20 years. Results of these studies
have been consistently positive and GOPO
has been shown to reduce joint stiffness
and pain. Studies show it to be more effec-
tive than glucosamine and NSAIDs in
relieving joint symptoms. GOPO follows
a consumer trend toward incorporating
more natural, plant-based alternatives to
support health. The launch will be accom-
panied by digital, print, TV, radio and out-
door advertising, as well as a PR campaign.
In addition to the GOPO launch, we
are currently evaluating plans to get Smith
Bros. back into the market as quickly as
possible. Each brand presents its own
challenges and opportunities and we are
pleased to have both GOPO and Smith
Bros. join our growing family of brands
for the U.S. market. n
