Upton’s Naturals is paving the way
in a new category of meat alternatives with the introduction of ready-to-eat, natural jackfruit.
Native to Southeast Asia, jackfruit is
the world’s largest tree fruit. Beneath its
incredibly large and spiky exterior is a
mild-flavored, nutrient-dense meat substitute. According to Upton’s Naturals
officials, when cooked up young (i.e.
not ripe) and seasoned right, jackfruit
has the taste and texture of pulled pork
or shredded chicken.
Upton’s Naturals is offering jackfruit
in four varieties: Bar-B-Que, Chili
Lime Carnitas, Thai Curry and Original. All are packaged in a 10.6-
ounce box containing a retort pouch to maintain freshness, with a suggested retail price of $4.99. While shelf-stable, Upton’s Naturals recommends it be merchandised in the refrigerated section.
Once picked, the fruit has a shelf
life of only a day or two, so Upton’s
Naturals has found a partner in
Thailand to do all of its processing
before shipping the finished product
overseas. The company works with
a network of family farms that have
been growing cultivated jackfruit for
many years and selling it in its ripened form.

an incredibly versatile and healthful
meat alternative that is relatively foreign to the American market,” says

Naturals, based in Chicago. “We set out to make jackfruit easier to enjoy
