No Life at Mars
A 70-year history in the
Baltimore area came to
an end in July when Mars
Super Markets shut down
its final eight stores.
The family-owned retailer
opened its first store in Essex,
Md. in 1943 in the center of
an apartment and military
housing community known as Mars Estates. Because of
that location, founder Joseph D’Anna adopted the Mars
name. In 1945, he opened a second store in town. Joined
by his brothers Carmen and Angelo, in 1946 they opened
a store in Dundalk, Md., closing the two Essex stores. Joe
eventually sold his interest in the company to Carmen
and Angelo, who each maintained a 50 percent ownership. Over the years it grew to operate stores in Baltimore,
Harford and Howard counties and became a major competitive force in the area, holding its own against Giant
Food and Safeway.
Sales, however, had been declining for several years and
the Rosedale, Md.-based chain gradually shut down stores.
In late May it sold five stores, mostly in east Baltimore
County, to Sunbury, Pa.-based Weis Markets, and was trying to sell off its remaining eight stores to preserve as many
jobs as possible.
and eagle emblem are printed in gold
directly on the glass. Another striking
feature of the design is its shape,
which necessitated a whole series
of innovations to the traditional
champagne production process.
Its most eye-catching feature
is the reinterpretation of the
famous Cordon Rouge red sash,
which is celebrating its 140th
anniversary this year. On Mumm
Grand Cordon, the red sash is
transformed into a genuine red
ribbon, indented in the glass.
The bottle was created by multi-award-winning designer Ross
Lovegrove, which whom Maison
Mumm previously collaborated on
a limited-edition sabre.
