A BIGGER FIESTA
Fiesta Mart acquired 11 Minyard Food
Stores in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex
from RLS Supermarkets, ending the banner
of the pioneering supermarket chain.
“We are excited to welcome Minyard
Food Stores to the Fiesta family,” says
Michael Byars, CEO of Fiesta Mart, based
in Houston. “This action reinforces the strategic growth plan we put forth early
last year. Our entire Fiesta team has worked together to move the brand forward
organically, and now through acquisition we continue on our growth plan.”
Byars has personal ties to Minyard, which was based in the Metroplex sub-
urb of Coppell, Texas. He worked for the chain from January 2005 through
January 2009, ultimately serving as CEO and president of Minyard for more
than three years. He joined Fiesta last year and has focused on reinvigoration
of the company’s core consumer promise: “To provide consumers the freshest
quality products and extensive assortment, at the value they need to celebrate
food and family every day.”
In early 2015, Fiesta was purchased by ACON, an international private
equity investment firm. “ACON is pleased to add Minyard Food Stores to the
Fiesta team as part of our strategic vision to grow the Fiesta brand,” says Andre
Bhatia, a managing partner of ACON, based
in Washington, D.C. “Our prior supermarket
investing experience and success will further
strengthen Fiesta’s position in the markets
The Minyard stores will continue to be
supplied by their current supplier AWG,
Founded in Dallas in 1962, Minyard was one of the first supermarket chains
owned by women, the two daughters of the company’s founder. At its peak it had
5,200 employees, sales of $900 million, and operated 69 Minyard, Carnival and
Sack ‘n Save supermarkets and 15 On the Go fuel centers in Dallas/Ft. Worth.
The Minyard family sold the chain in 2004 to a Ft. Worth-based private
equity firm, and in 2011, what was left of the company was acquired by Ray
and Leticia Schalek, who operate RLS.
The stores being acquired currently operate under the Minyard Sun Fresh
banner. RLS will continue to operate eight Sun Fresh Market stores and two
Cash Saver stores in southern Dallas, but the Minyard name will be ceded to
the history books.
