TAKING BIGGER BITES
The Bites Co. has gained quite a following around New England
and Metro New York for its signature bite-size biscotti cookies. Now
the Bridgeport, Conn.-based company is planning to go national.
Bites were created by Dina Upton, who baked them for family and
friends for years. Many suggested that she sell them and asked where
they could buy them, so she decided to get into the cookie business.
Available in Almond, Lemon and Cocoa flavors, Bites are all-natural, non-GMO and contain no preservatives, trans-fat, high-fructose corn syrup, added salt, MSG, canola or other oils. Plus, they
are low in sodium, certified kosher and have only 12 calories with less than 1-gram
of sugar in each cookie.
“The Bites Co. has begun to work with a network of brokers and distributors from
coast-to-coast,” says Upton, founder and baker of The Bites Co. “We are planning to
be available at specialty food or better supermarkets by the end of 2016.”
Bites are available in two sizes: a 4.5-ounce bag containing at least 40 bites has a
manufacturers suggested retail price of $4.99, and a 1-ounce bag of at least 10 bites
has a suggested retail of $1.50.
“The Almond Bites get their amazing flavor from pure almond extract; we do not
add nuts to the product,” Upton says. “Our delicious Lemon Biscotti Bites achieve
their amazing lemon flavor from using pure lemon extract and fresh lemon peel.
When you crave something chocolate, our Cocoa Bites are the perfect selection.
They will satisfy your chocolate urge without all the calories of a candy bar.”

CherryMan is now offered in a 12-ounce PET jar
that is recyclable, BPA-free and PVC-free. According
to company officials, consumers will be drawn
to the jar’s modern, squared-off shape and the
fun engaging CherryMan graphics on the label.
Retailers will benefit from the lighter weight, lower
shipping costs and greatly reduced breakage risk
that PET offers. The suggested retail price is $2.99.
“Many manufacturers are moving away from
glass containers and toward PET packaging
because it is stronger, lighter weight and less expensive to ship,” says Josh Reynolds,
president of Gray & Co., the Portland, Ore.-based manufacturer of the CherryMan brand.
“Food safety is paramount,” Reynolds says. “All of our retail maraschino cherries
are pasteurized for the consumer’s protection. The temperature-sensitive precision
required to heat a PET jar while maintaining structural integrity for capping and label-
ing is very challenging. It’s been a focused team effort for the past several years among
R&D engineering and our vendors.”
Adds Beth Newall, business development director for Gray & Co., “Our retail grocery
partners and distributors have been 100 percent supportive of this change.”
For the foreseeable future, a glass option will still be available for the 12-ounce size,
as well as the company’s 10- and 2-ounce sizes, company officials say.

Sugar Bowl Bakery has expanded its line of
traditional Madeleines—butter-rich mini pound
cake-type pastries with only 90 calories per
cake—with three additional flavors: Lemon,
Pumpkin Spice and Orange.
According to Sugar Bowl Bakery officials, the
newest flavor varieties of Madeleines are in line
with Sugar Bowl Bakery’s commitment to fresh
and wholesome baked goods and contain no
artificial flavors, artificial colors, trans-fat or preservatives. The Lemon Madeleines are made with
Meyer lemon zest and lemon oil; the Orange
Madeleines with Valencia orange zest and orange
oil; and Pumpkin Madeleines with rich, real
pumpkin puree and spices.
“We debuted our traditional Madeleines in
2003, and they’ve continuously been a fan favor-
ite,” says Andrew Ly, CEO of Sugar Bowl Bakery,
based in San Francisco. “It only made sense to
expand the line to include some of our favorite
seasonal flavors. Biting into the bright Lemon
and Orange Madeleines will take you to beautiful
spring and summer days, and the Pumpkin Spice
will whisk you to cozy autumn and rich winter. We
wanted to make something we’d enjoy with our
own families, and you can taste the love.”
Sugar Bowl Bakery Madeleines are packaged in
8.4-ounce, 12-count Regular tubs and 16.8-ounce,
24-count Family Size tubs with suggested retail
prices of $4.99 and $7.99, respectively.
