will deliver huge returns.
Lindar Corp., based in Baxter, Minn., is
working with companies, including Safeway
and Albertsons, to protect fresh merchandise
and customer health. The Safeway banners
are using Lindar’s Simply Secure Tamper
Obvious Packaging, a two-piece pie and
cake container that has special tabs that snap
into place to secure the product. To open the
package, the perforated tabs are simply torn
off, making it user-friendly, and easy to identify if the container has been opened.
“The packaging also includes a built-in freshness seal and visually appealing
design to show off products in a safe, fresh
and secure way,” says Dave Fosse, Lindar’s
director of marketing, who added the chain
launched the packaging in July.
*Sustainability. “Zero waste” was con-
sidered a catch-phrase in 2015, Adam
Gendell, senior manager of Charlottesville,
Va.-based Sustainable Packaging Coalition
said in the Environmental Leader article, 6
Sustainable Packaging Trends to Watch in
2016. That trend shows no sign of slowing as
grocers industry-wide continue to focus on
“The good news is there are lots of eco-
friendly packaging choices, ranging from
recyclable to biodegradable,” says Steve Olk,
client development for Planglow USA, based
in St. Paul, Minn.
Some of the more popular options are
polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packages,
which are petroleum-based and the most
commonly recycled material in the U.S.,
For example, Anchor utilizes FDA-
approved, post-consumer recycled PET.
Every new hot food and microwavable con-
tainer is made with 40 percent less petro-
leum-based resin, all recyclable curbside.
Similarly, Clear Lam features bio-based
packaging comprised of polylactic acid
(PLA) flexible and rigid rollstock; bio-PET
rigid rollstock made from sugarcane and
bio-PE flexible rollstock, also made from
Since sustainable packaging is not always
the most cost-effective option, Planglow is
changing the game with packaging made of
compostable materials. While still uncon-
ventional, compostable options are clearly
causing a stir. A small grocer that operates
on a college campus adopted Planglow’s
compostable packaging. The switch has con-
tributed to more than 2,800 pounds of pack-
aging eliminated from landfills annually, as
well as contributed to a 17 percent increase in
sales, Olk said.
“In this era, eco-friendly packaging is considered more high-end, and can be marketed
with premiere lines,” he says. “I do think people are more willing to pay few extra cents if
packaging is eco-friendly.”
